Millikin University announced Wednesday the school has hired a new chair of the Department of Exercise Science and Sport (ESS) after he served a six-year stint at Eastern Illinois University.

Dr. John Storsved will serve as the new chair, as well as the director of the Athletic Training program.

He most recently worked at EIU for six years as an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Sports Studies, as coordinator of clinical education in the athletic training program and served as the graduate program coordinator during the 2015-16 academic year. His work history also includes academic positions at Illinois State University, Purdue University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Storsved has been certified by the Board of Certification and National Athletic Trainers Association for 25 years. He also spent over a decade as a per diem athletic trainer for Carle Sports Medicine in Urbana.

Millikin Provost Dr. Jeff Aper says Dr. Storsved’s hiring brings a wide range of experience to the university.

“His arrival is a very important step forward in the continued work to expand and strengthen the excellent work of the faculty, staff and students in the Department of Exercise Science and Sport,” Dr. Aper explains.

One of Dr. Storsved’s main initiatives within the Department of Exercise Science and Sport will be leading the transition of the Athletic Training program from a bachelor’s degree level to a master’s degree, which has been mandated by the national accrediting body.
