The Maritime Athletics Department has announced the hiring of Hideyuki “Hide” Okuwa as Head Athletic Trainer beginning with the 2016-17 season.

Okuwa will be responsible for overseeing the medical care of approximately 450 student-athletes among all of Maritime’s varsity teams. In addition, he is responsible for the daily operations of the Athletic Training Room and any medical assistance that student-athletes may require.

Okuwa comes to Maritime after serving as a full-time member of the University of Houston’s Athletics Training Staff, a role he began in 2010. While at Houston, Okuwa focused primarily on the program’s NCAA Division I football team.

Before joining the full-time staff, Okuwa spent three seasons as a graduate assistant at Houston, managing the athletic training efforts of the Cougar’s men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs in addition to the women’s basketball team.

As a graduate student, Okuwa earned his Master’s Degree in Physical Education focusing in Sports and Fitness Administration in December of 2009.

Prior to Okuwa’s arrival in Texas, he worked in Indiana while obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree from Indiana State University in Athletic Training. While with the Sycamores, he assisted in the Athletic Training office as an undergraduate student.

Before coming to the United States, Okuwa worked in his native Japan as a Student Practitioner and Student Athletic Trainer in the city of Osaka.

He has been a member of National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) since 2006, and he is also a member the Southwest Athletic Training Association.
