Safety stands at the forefront of Spartan athletics

A strong tradition of excellence both on and off the playing field defines the Aurora University student-athlete experience. Character, integrity and civility are as important as game-winning baskets and goals. At the core of the AU athletic experience is the health and welfare of every student-athlete.

“We are committed to the overall well-being of our student-athletes,” said athletic director Jim Hamad. “We invest in our personnel and resources to make sure we are providing the highest level of professional care to each student.”

In addition to a team physician, the athletic staff includes six certified athletic trainers, ensuring onsite coverage at every practice and home game.

“Our staff in Athletic Training offers both preventative and care services at no cost to our student-athletes,” said Nicki Pieart, assistant athletic director and head athletic trainer.

Through a variety of educational activities and weekly on-campus clinics, student-athletes receive expert health and fitness advice on a wide-range of topics. Players also participate in the Spartan Strength and Conditioning Program, an initiative that provides student-athletes with individualized training to help them with performance goals and injury prevention.

“Everything we do is student-focused, and as a result, we have seen a dramatic decrease in sports injuries,” said head strength and conditioning coach Chad Trudo.

The Athletic Department also has strong relationships with the AU Counseling Center, Disabilities Resource Office and Wellness Center to develop comprehensive treatment plans and make the necessary accommodations after an injury. The department also maintains state-of-the art medical equipment, including online injury tracking software, specialized software to help with concussion assessment and four automated external defibrillators for use in potentially life-threatening situations.

“We strive to provide an array of services to help foster success in all areas of our student-athletes’ lives,” said Hamad. “I am proud of our team and I look forward to a successful upcoming season.”
