Tom Monagan, the associate athletic director for student services and head athletic trainer at the University of Texas at Dallas since 2010, has been named the head athletic trainer at Colorado College, Director of Athletics Ken Ralph announced today.

Monagan joins the CC program with more than 20 years of collegiate and professional athletic training experience. During his tenure at UT-Dallas, he oversaw the athletic training staff and provided oversight to the athletic department’s strength & conditioning staff. He also collaborated with the University’s Student-Athlete Affairs program in developing nutrition, drug and alcohol education initiatives for the school’s 300-plus student-athletes.

“I am very excited to join the Colorado College family,” Monagan said. “I would like to thank Ken Ralph for this opportunity, and for his confidence in me in taking over the sports medicine program. It truly is an honor to take over this program. During the search process, I could see how special of a place CC is, and my time spent on campus with the coaches, staff, and administration only confirmed that.”

The Rochester, New York, native recently was named the NCAA Division III Head Athletic Trainer of the Year by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). He will receive the award at the 2017 NATA Convention next month in Houston. Monagan also received the Excellence in Athletic Training Award from the Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association in July of 2016.

“We are thrilled we could attract a candidate with Tom’s experience and expertise to join our department in this important role,” Ralph said. “We are confident Tom can build upon the outstanding quality of care our students receive from our sports medicine staff.”

Monagan is a graduate of John Carroll University, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in physical education with a specialization in athletic training in 1996. Monagan then received a master’s degree in physical education from Eastern Illinois University in 1997, while concentrating in sports administration and exercise physiology. Immediately upon graduation, he accepted a head athletic trainer position at Blackburn College, where he remained until 2000.

Monagan then joined the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club as a minor league athletic trainer in the Gulf Coast League, where he was an athletic trainer for the GCL All-Star Game in 2001. After one season in Bradenton, Fla., he returned to the college ranks, where he worked at Nebraska Wesleyan University, Gannon University and St. Bonaventure University.

In 2006, he was hired as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Central Arkansas, where he provided medical and rehabilitation coverage of the school’s NCAA Division I football and basketball teams, among others. He served as a clinical preceptor in the UCA Athletic Training Program, and was the clinical coordinator for the program his last two years there.

Monagan is nationally board certified, licensed as an athletic trainer in Texas, and is an active member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), the Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association (SWATA), the Texas State Athletic Trainers’ Association, and the North Texas Athletic Trainers’ Society. He currently is serving on the NATA’s Committee of Professional Ethics, and is Chair of the Ethics Committee for SWATA. He has presented on professional ethics, social media and effective communication at various educational institutions and clinical symposiums.

Monagan, a volunteer instructor for the American Red Cross, enjoys golf and traveling in his spare time.
