Athletic Trainer Wins Humanitarian Award

Cuero ISD launched a new recognition award at the trustee meeting on Dec. 14.
It is the Mike Wilkinson Gobbler Humanitarian Award. It memorializes 32-year CISD transportation mechanic Mike Wilkinson.
The first three recipients were Cuero High School athletic trainer Chris Warren and Gobbler football players Noah Barron and Diego Hernandez.
Receiving the award at the meeting, it was explained that following the Cuero – Navarro play-off in San Antonio on Nov. 27, the three performed CPR on Wilkinson in the parking lot at Gustafson Stadium until paramedics arrived.
Services were held for Wilkinson on Dec. 4 at Evergreen Cemetery in Skidmore.
Warren said as Wilkinson and co-worker Leslie Parr were about to leave the game that evening, Wilkinson became unresponsive and stopped breathing.
Barron and Hernandez were preparing to board the Gobbler bus and ran to the calls for help. They administered CPR until Warren arrived and he continued the effort until paramedics arrived.
Warren said, “Every semester, the nurse teaches the kids CPR. I go in and help them with the skills check off. She teaches them everything. I’m glad that we have that opportunity to do that.”
“Our kids know how to respond and they did when an emergency came up. They reacted. They didn’t stand back and watch it,” he said. “The kids stepped up.”
The humanitarian award recognizes Wilkinson’s affection for the Gobblers.
“Mike and Leslie always go to the games. They take a suburban so that if anything happens like a bus breaks down, they are there to help out or if a bus driver gets sick, we would have an extra driver there,” Warren said.
“He was a fan of the football team. He loved watching the games. He always wanted to talk about the team and how the kids were doing. He was always excited to watch the games,” Warren added.
Warren has been the athletic trainer for CHS for four years. Barron is a senior and Hernandez is a junior at CHS.
