HSU professor David Stuckey has been named as a Hall of Fame member of the Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association. The newest SWATA Hall of Fame members are Stuckey, Dan O’ Connor, Mitzi Laughlin, Lorna Strong and Mike Carroll.
The SWATA “Hall of Fame”, which is the highest honor a member of District VI may receive, was developed for the purpose of honoring members of District VI whose dedicated service, past achievements, and professional contributions have furthered the advancement of the SWATA and the athletic training profession. Candidates must have be a seasoned athletic trainer; be a Certified or Associate member in good standing; be or have been a member of District VI, working, retired, or deceased; elected, appointed, or volunteered service or significant contributions to the SWATA.
Stuckey is currently an associate professor and director of athletic training education at Hardin-Simmons University, in Abilene, TX, where he has been employed for 29 years. He was clinically active as head athletic trainer at Hardin-Simmons University for 20 years, before moving to a full-time academic role. Stuckey was named the CUATC NCAA Division III Head Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2006, earned the NATA Athletic Trainer Service Award in 2012 and was granted the NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer award in 2013.
Stuckey has been a certified athletic trainer since 1984 and a Texas licensed athletic trainer since 1986. His career at HSU began as head athletic trainer and an adjunct instructor in August 1986. He directed the provision of athletic training services to HSU student-athletes until 2006.
In 1999, Stuckey became a full-time faculty member when a formal athletic training major was created at HSU. He left the athletic department in 2006 to devote his time to teaching and directing athletic training education.
Stuckey is a regular presenter at national, regional, and local athletic training symposia and has provided volunteer and contract athletic training services at national and local events, as well as assisting with athletic training services as needed at HSU.
SWATA honors and awards will be presented in Arlington, Texas July 21-23 at the SWATA Annual Meeting.
