Former Jefferson High School teacher and coach Joel Provencio pleaded guilty to multiple charges stemming from an investigation into his relationship with a 16-year-old student on Thursday. As part of his plea agreement, he will serve ten years probation.

According to court documents, Provencio was arrested in 2015 when the 16-year-old student came forward to another Jefferson High School teacher who then reported the incident to the district.

During the investigation, EPISD Police learned that Provencio started texting the girl inappropriately in 2014 when she was a trainer with the football team’s athletic training program. During this time, Provencio started giving the girl rides home from practice.

During the 2014 school year, Provencio reportedly convinced the victim to go with him to his house where he made several sexual advances at her until they had intercourse. The two allegedly had sex on three occasions at Provencio’s east El Paso home.

After the encounter, the victim claims Provencio began sending her sexually explicit text messages of his genitals and other sexually suggestive photos. EPISD Police were able to recover several of these images from the victim’s home computer.

Provencio pleaded guilty to two counts of improper relationship between educator and student and two counts of sexual performance of a child employ/induce/authorize. He was sentenced to ten years probation on each count, which will all be served concurrently.
