A 2014 graduate of Fort Lewis College, John Jewell returns to his alma mater to join the Skyhawks athletic training staff, announced today by head athletic trainer Wayne Barger.

“It is a pleasure to have John Jewell join the Fort Lewis College athletic training staff,” said Barger. “John has always demonstrated a strong passion, loyalty, and commitment to FLC student-athlete health care. His devotion to the profession has helped him develop a strong knowledge base, while developing quality skills that will have a significant impact in athletic training.

“He joins a group of alumni that share a common bond of education, professional philosophy, devotion, passion, and loyalty for Fort Lewis College. Their familiarity and experience with FLC and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference will definitely minimize the learning curve as we jump into 2017 athletic season.”

Jewell, who became a Board Certified Athletic Trainer in May 2014, continued his education at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash.  He served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at CWU for the track and field, cross country, women’s basketball and football programs.

“I’m looking forward to continuing my professional career at Fort Lewis College where my excitement for athletic training began,” said Jewell.  “We have an amazingly devoted and knowledgeable staff that is largely made up of alumni who really care for FLC student-athletes.”

Prior to earning his Master of Science degree in Athletic Administration from Central Washington, Jewell worked at Villanova University as an athletic trainer intern for the football and women’s crew programs.

Jewell, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Athletic Training from Fort Lewis College, was the head athletic training student for both basketball programs and football.  He also aided the certified nurse practitioner in the FLC Health Center in his four years as a student.  Jewell gained experience while assisting physical therapists at Rivergate Physical Therapy, as well as working with the FLC Team Physician and Durango Orthopedics Associates.

Jewell, who is the fourth alumni on the Skyhawks athletic training staff (Meghan PowellJill Bradley and Ashley Harmelink), began Aug. 1.  He will oversee the men’s soccer and men’s basketball programs.
