How has being an athletic trainer inspired you to live a healthy lifestyle?

When you are in the business of keeping players healthy obviously it is important for you to set a good example for them.  As a result, you are inspired to live the healthy lifestyle that you are advocating.

How do you stay motivated?

I stay motivated by the fact that I love what I do. I am constantly surrounded by young active athletes and take pride in trying to stay in shape for them.

How has baseball helped you be successful professionally?

I have been blessed to be in the game of baseball for 35 years, the last 24 in the Major Leagues. Having worked my way up through the Minor Leagues has given me a great appreciation for the position I currently hold in the Major Leagues.

What types of healthy activities do you enjoy doing with your family?

We enjoy all types of activities including swimming, biking, golf, and bowling in addition to the boys’ sports activities of baseball, basketball, and tennis.

What are some of your favorite healthy foods?

I love fruits and vegetables, especially green vegetables like asparagus.

What are some tips to help prevent an injury?

Always stay active throughout your lifetime and this will help you prevent injuries.  Emphasis on flexibility (activities like yoga) and strength (especially functional body strength exercises) will help as well.

What is your advice for any aspiring young athletes? Playing multiple sports, especially when you are young, is very important so that you are developing yourself as a complete athlete.
