UMass Lowell Head Athletic Trainer Artie Poitras has announced the hiring of Lainie Bisbee and the promotion of Kristen Mitchell, as the two will serve as associate athletic trainers on the River Hawk Athletic Healthcare staff.

Bisbee joined the Healthcare staff in October of 2016, while Mitchell has currently worked as the assistant athletic trainer since 2013.

Bisbee’s primary role will be as certified athletic trainer for the women’s basketball team. Prior to arriving at UMass Lowell, Bisbee served four years as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Detroit Mercy before her one-year tenure as the associate head athletic trainer for the Titans. Bisbee was primarily responsible for the care of women’s basketball, men’s soccer and softball student-athletes.

“Lainie was identified as our top candidate early in our search process,” mentioned Poitras. “She impressed all involved, and we are fortunate and excited to have her join the UMass Lowell Athletic Healthcare Staff. She brings a wealth of Division I experience, primarily in women’s basketball, to our staff.  Her experience will be invaluable as we complete the Division I transition process and continue to improve the areas of providing quality healthcare, student-athlete welfare and the overall student-athlete experience. ”

Bisbee received her master’s degree from Ball State University in sports administration. While at Ball State, she worked with the field hockey, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams as a graduate assistant athletic trainer.

An undergraduate of Grand Valley State University, she received her bachelor’s degree in athletic training in 2007. Bisbee is a native of Warren, Michigan.

“I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity to join the River Hawk family. I can’t wait to watch UMass Lowell grow,” said Bisbee.

Mitchell enters her first season as an associate athletic trainer and will continue to work with the men’s basketball team.

“I am delighted that we have been able to recognize and reward Kristen for her work during her time here,” stated Poitras. “She has provided quality health care to our student-athletes and been a source of counsel during the Division I transition process; not only to me, but the department as well, as she served on the IPP Committee.  I look forward to working with her in her new role, and seeing her continuing efforts to provide quality health care and ideas in improving student-athlete welfare and the overall student-athlete experience.”

Before arriving at UMass Lowell in 2013, Mitchell spent three years as an assistant athletic trainer at Stony Brook University and was primarily responsible for the care of women’s basketball, cross country and softball student athletes. In addition, Ribbons served as an approved clinical instructor for Stony Brook’s Athletic Training Education Program.

“I am extremely honored for the opportunity to continue to develop professionally in the field of athletic training here at UMass Lowell,” said Mitchell. “It is exciting to be a part of the tremendous growth that we as an athletic healthcare department, as well as the entire athletic department and university are undergoing. I would like to thank Artie Poitras and the athletics administration for their continued support.”
