Lone Star Conference DISTINGUISHES ATHLETIC TRAINING STUDENTS

A total of 27 student athletic trainers were recognized by the Lone Star Conference on Thursday as the league announced its annual Athletic Training Student Academic Award winners for 2016-17.

Each academic year, the LSC recognizes student athletic trainers who devote several hours to assist with the operation of the athletics department while also finding the time to excel in the classroom. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student athletic trainers must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average with a minimum of 24 semester hours at the nominating institution. The qualifications mirror those required of student-athletes to gain LSC All-Academic recognition.

This year’s honorees represent six of the LSC’s 11 member institutions, with West Texas A&M having a league-high 10 honorees, followed by Midwestern State with eight recipients and Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville with three each.  Texas A&M-Commerce had two honorees, while Tarleton State had one receive recognition.

Midwestern State Named Lone Star AT Staff of the Year

The athletic training staff at Midwestern State University was recognized by their peers with the 12th annual Lone Star Conference Athletic Training Staff of the Year award for the 2015-16 academic year.

MSU claimed the athletic training award for the league, which consists of 11 member institutions with eight in Texas, one in Oklahoma and two in New Mexico.

Gary Diehm and Christanie Rodriguez lead the Mustangs athletic training staff with assistance from Traci Rigdon and Caitlin Hall.

The LSC Athletic Training Staff of the Year award is presented annually to the top institution as voted by the head athletic trainer of each member school.

The purpose of the award is to raise awareness of the athletic training profession. Criteria for the award include the athletic training staff’s hospitality toward visiting athletic trainers and teams; preparedness with supplies, equipment and services for visiting athletic trainers and teams; preparedness for emergency situations; and care for injured athletes from visiting teams.

Javelinas Receive Academic Distinction

  • The Lone Star Conference released its annual student athletic training academic award recipients and Texas A&M University-Kingsville featured three athletic trainers as Monica Valdez, Jessica Johnson and Marco Regalado all received the distinction.All three were graduate students. Valdez is the assistant athletic trainer for outreach and is in her fourth year with the Javelinas. The Alice native received her master’s in guidance and counseling in December 2015. Johnson is in her second year at Texas A&M-Kingsville and along with working outreach with Valdez, works primarily with softball. A Zapata native, Regalado was a student athletic trainer for the Javelinas and is now the assistant defensive line coach under Ronnie Palmer.To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student athletic trainers must have at least a 3.30 grade point average with a minimum of 24 semester hours at the nomination institution. The award also rewards student athletic trainers who assist with the operation of the athletic training office. A total of 33 student athletic trainers received the conference honor.
