Softball Standout Returns to UWSP to Head Up Athletic Training Department

Former UW-Stevens Point softball standout Melissa Wenig (pronounced WHEN-ig) has been appointed the Director of Sport Medicine at her alma mater, UWSP Director of Athletics Brad Duckworth announced today (June 20).

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to return to UWSP,” said Wenig. “It is a privilege to once again be a part of an athletic department with such a powerful legacy. I am excited and thankful to be able to give back to the program that taught me what it is to be an athletic trainer. Returning to UWSP is like coming home.”

Wenig joins the Pointers athletic training department after four years at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee.  The last two years she was the head of the department following two years as an assistant athletic trainer.

Prior to joining the staff at Cardinal Stritch, Wenig worked at Illinois State University as a graduate assistant, where she obtained her Master’s Degree in Athletic Training.

Wenig received her Bachelor’s Degree in athletic training from UWSP, where she also was a member of the softball team for four years.  Her senior year as a Pointer, she hit .351 with a team-high 33 RBI to earn All-WIAC honorable mention honors.  She also led UWSP in runs batted in as a junior with 26.  All four seasons at UWSP, Wenig was a member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.

Wenig Promoted To Head Athletic Trainer & Senior Woman Administrator

Dr. Tim Van Alstine, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Cardinal Stritch University, announced the promotion of Melissa Wenig to Head Athletic Trainer and Senior Woman Administrator of Cardinal Stritch University Athletics.

“Melissa is certainly deserving of this promotion. She has done everything necessary to advance her career, which would eventually lead to a Head Trainer position,” said Dr. Tim Van Alstine the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “She has all the requisite skills and qualifications. We are fortunate to have her as a member of our Athletic Training Staff and administrative team, and I know our coaches and student-athlete value her opinion and expertise.”

Melissa is entering her third season at Cardinal Stritch University and will be replacing former Head Athletic Trainer April Gotzler. For the previous two seasons, Wenig held the position of assistant athletic trainer at Stritch. She was responsible for overseeing the medical coverage for women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, and softball.

Wenig will now oversee the medical coverage for all 15 of Stritch’s varsity sports, while managing the athletic training department and staff.

“I am honored to have received this promotion,” stated Melissa Wenig. “April Gotzler did a wonderful job here; she was a great mentor and I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to pick up where she left off. I’m looking forward to continuing to provide the best possible care for our student athletes.”

Before her time at Stritch Melissa previously worked at Illinois State as a graduate assistant, where she primarily covered swimming, diving, and cheerleading. She also obtained her Master’s Degree in Athletic Training from ISU.

She received her Bachelor’s Degree in athletic training from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where she also was a member of the UWSP softball team for four years.

She currently resides in Shorewood, Wisconsin.
