Goose Creek South Carolina Athletic Trainer Pulls in National, State Awards

Longtime Goose Creek High School health science teacher and certified athletic trainer Ernie Drews has been honored with national and state awards this spring.

As a winner of the National Athletic Trainers Association service award, Drews is invited to an awards ceremony during the NATA Symposium in Houston from June 25-29. The NATA service award is given to those individuals who have at least 25 years of experience as a certified athletic trainer with NATA. The award is given to a select few nominees from across the United States.

Closer to home, Drews was chosen as the 2017 Athletic Trainer of the Year by The South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association for the second time. He will be recognized at the SCACA convention in Charleston on July 23-26. He also received the award in 2004.

He has been a certified athletic trainer since 1992.

Drews has been honored for his efforts multiple times during his career. He worked the Shrine Bowl in 1994 and served as the South athletic trainer in the North-South all-star game in 1993 and 2001.

He has also volunteered many times to cover the North-South all-star basketball games as well as the South Carolina High School League state wrestling tournaments. He has coached girls basketball, softball, baseball and boys soccer at various points in his career.

He started his career at North Carolina State and graduated with both bachelors and masters’ degrees from Coastal Carolina. Early in his academic career, he taught physical education and biology for 12 years at Conway High School before moving to Goose Creek, where he will retire from athletic training and public education in 2018.

He began working at Goose Creek in 1999.

Simpson to Receive NATA Award

Morgan Simpson, AT, director of Citizens Memorial Hospital (CMH) Sports Medicine Center, has been selected to receive a National Athletic Trainer Service Award in June at the 67th Annual National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Clinical Symposium in Baltimore, Md.

This prestigious award recognizes NATA members for their exceptional contributions to the athletic training profession. It reflects decades of service and leadership at the state, local and national levels.

Simpson is a licensed athletic trainer and has a degree in sports medicine and athletic training from Missouri State University, Springfield. He has been the director of the CMH Sports Medicine Center for 18 years.

The CMH Sports Medicine Center is located inside the Ken and Jane Meyer Wellness and Sports Center on the campus of Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar. The staff works closely with the SBU athletic training staff to provide physical rehabilitation services. The Center also provides services to area schools including Bolivar, Buffalo, Osceola, Pleasant Hope, and Stockton.
