Ohio Athletic trainer wins firefly award

Two Fairfield Medical Center staff members were recently honored with the Firefly Award from the Adult, Family and Children First Council of Fairfield County for partnering with the Safe Kids Coalition and Injury Prevention Team to educate the community about concussion symptoms and prevention.

Carolyn Gilliam, physical medicine manager at FMC, and Leigh Spring, certified athletic trainer at Lancaster High School, were presented with the award on Nov. 19 at Alley Park in Lancaster.

As part of their collaboration with the Safe Kids Coalition and Injury Prevention Team, four educational fliers were created and an event was coordinated for local athletes and community members that featured a speaker who had suffered a traumatic brain injury as the result of a concussion. The four fliers developed for education on concussions and proper helmet fit were reviewed by the state evaluator and shared with others.

The Firefly Award was created to recognize those who have worked alongside the Adult, Family and Children First Council to create energy and light by their collaborative work.
