Former UW-Stevens Point softball standout Melissa Wenig (pronounced WHEN-ig) has been appointed the Director of Sport Medicine at her alma mater, UWSP Director of Athletics Brad Duckworth announced today (June 20).

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to return to UWSP,” said Wenig. “It is a privilege to once again be a part of an athletic department with such a powerful legacy. I am excited and thankful to be able to give back to the program that taught me what it is to be an athletic trainer. Returning to UWSP is like coming home.”

Wenig joins the Pointers athletic training department after four years at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee.  The last two years she was the head of the department following two years as an assistant athletic trainer.

Prior to joining the staff at Cardinal Stritch, Wenig worked at Illinois State University as a graduate assistant, where she obtained her Master’s Degree in Athletic Training.

Wenig received her Bachelor’s Degree in athletic training from UWSP, where she also was a member of the softball team for four years.  Her senior year as a Pointer, she hit .351 with a team-high 33 RBI to earn All-WIAC honorable mention honors.  She also led UWSP in runs batted in as a junior with 26.  All four seasons at UWSP, Wenig was a member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.
