Maritza Castro Named DSL Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year

Earlier this week, the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) announced that Padres Minor League trainer Maritza Castro of the Dominican Summer League (DSL) has been named the 2015 Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year for the DSL.

Castro, who has worked as an athletic trainer with the Dominican Summer League Padres for the last few seasons, was one of 18 award winners from the 16 leagues of Minor League Baseball.

She is now eligible to be awarded the prestigious Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year Award, which will be voted upon by the full membership of PBATS.

The overall award, which is only available to the 18 winners of their individual leagues and positions, award will be given at the 2015 Major League Baseball Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tennessee. The 114th Annual MLB Winter Meetings will be held between December 6th to December 10th of this year after the close of the regular season.

These awards are given annually to one member of each of the 16 leagues in Minor League Baseball, as well as one award for the Dominican Summer League.  An additional award is given to the Minor League Coordinator of the Year.

Castro becomes the second Padres’ MiLB Athletic Trainer to be recognized for a PBATS award, as she joins Daniel Turner in being another award recipient in the organizations’ top notch athletic training staff. Turner earned Texas League Athletic Trainer of the Year honors in 2014, and is in his ninth season of working in the Padres organization as a trainer with the Double-A San Antonio Missions.
