Maine hospital creates hotline to reach athletic trainers

Preseason training began for many fall sports on Monday and Eastern Maine Medical Center has developed a new ‘injury helpline’ that allows parents, athletes or coaches to call and get advice from an experienced athletic trainer for free.

The trainers will assess client’s injuries over the phone and coordinate their care. Anyone, of any age, who experiences an activity-related injury can call the helpline. Athletic trainer JP Stowe is one of four trainers who will be on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

“I felt the service was really needed in this area for quick and reliable sports medicine access, and to call is free. And if you come see one of the athletic trainers it’s free,” said Stowe.

The injury helpline is only for non-emergencies.

The number to the helpline is 207-974-7400, and there’s more information on EMMC Sports Health website.
