Freitas named top MWL athletic trainer

The Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) announced that Rafael Freitas of the Kane County Cougars has been selected by his peers as the 2015 Midwest League Athletic Trainer of the Year. Rafael now becomes one of eighteen league winners to be considered for Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year, which will be announced and awarded at theBaseball Winter Meetings in December.

Freitas is in his second year with the Arizona Diamondbacks and prior to that, spent two seasons as trainer for the Cincinnati Reds’ Dominican Summer League team in 2012-13. He served as head athletic trainer for Team Brazil in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Freitas graduated from Florida International University in 2012 with his master’s degree in sports and fitness and from Florida State University in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training.

Other league award winners with ties to the Cougars include ’11 Cougars trainer James Stone, who was named Carolina League Athletic Trainer of the Year, and ’13 Cougars trainer Shane Nelson, named Southern League Athletic Trainer of the Year.
