Alabama athletic trainer’s wife, fights cancer for second time

A community is showing their support for a Spanish Fort woman battling cancer for the second time.

In 2010, Robert and his wife Jamie Milam moved to Spanish Fort. The couple met while attending Auburn University, and have been married for over three years.

A life-saver on the field is fighting a battle off

Rob is the athletic trainer at Spanish Fort High School. He’s been recognized for saving the lives of two athletes.

For the second time, his wife Jamie has been diagnosed with cervical cancer.

“It was tragic… what else can you say? It was a shot to the gut,” recalled Robert.

Wednesday, Jamie started chemotherapy and radiation.

Brent Boyd is the head baseball coach at the high school. He’s also Robert’s best friend and neighbor. Boyd recalls Jamie’s first battle with cancer.

“That was tough then so we got to pull together and make sure we get this done together as a team,” Boyd said.

A community full of support

Many have raised money for the family. Last week at a football game Saraland High School students presented Robert with a check for $800.

“You don’t get a bigger heart than that. That’s just caring about somebody else more than yourself and that’s people helping people,” Robert said.

“It’s been fantastic to see… I have to admit. I have nothing but the highest regard for what Saraland did that night, and they continue to do. It is special to see,” Boyd said.

From Saraland high School to the Spanish Fort community, Robert said the support has been overwhelming.

“I think it’s more reciprocal from me caring for them now — they’re going to care for us in our time of need.” Robert said.

There’s an account set up for Jamie at 1st Community Bank in Spanish Fort.
