Texas High School Students get Athletic training experience

Being an athletic trainer for the Yoakum High School Bulldogs has become her life, said sophomore Angelica Rojas.

“I have no life right now because of training,” Angelica, 15, said. “It’s my life.”

The Yoakum Bulldogs went head-to-head against their rivals, the Cuero Gobblers last week, and lost 28-18.

“Since Cuero is our biggest rivalry, we’re usually pretty excited to play,” Angelica said. “Everything is pretty intense between us and Cuero.”

Friday, the Bulldogs go up against Sinton.77fcf8e13cbb7eab075274124e1eec93

“If we play the same way we played against La Grange, I think we’ll have a chance at winning,” Angelica said.

The Bulldogs’ loss against La Grange was narrow with a final score of 42-41.

“When you’re a trainer, you’re hoping nothing happens to the players, but if something does you have to be mentally ready for whatever happens,” Angelica said.

After graduating from high school, Angelica plans to study to become a cardiologist or physician. She wants to attend Texas A&M University.

Danielle Simmons, a junior and head student athletic trainer, has become like a mentor to her, Angelica said.

“I’ve learned a lot from her,” Angelica said. “She walks in and is concentrated and has priorities, she’s also really chill but she also knows how to get to work.”

Danielle, who moved to Yoakum two years ago, said although she doesn’t exactly share the same amount of hometown pride as others at her school, she still lets herself get caught up in the excitement on game day.

“I just like being out there with the guys, and I enjoy training,” Danielle, 16, said.

After she graduates, Danielle wants to attend Texas State University and become a physical therapist.

Danielle said she has enjoyed mentoring the younger athletic trainers.

“I like taking them under my wing and helping them out and teaching them new things.”
