It turns out that the “Athletic trainer appreciation ceremony” was a big ruse after Friday’s game between Servite (Anaheim, Calif.) and Orange Lutheran (Calif.).
But don’t think that Chaz Kekipi and Karen Zieger felt shorted.
Kekipi pulled off a clever trick play after the Trinity League contest, setting up the fake ceremony and getting on bended knee to propose to his girlfriend while surrounded by the players of both teams. Why both teams? Because Kekipi is the head athletic trainer for Servite and Zieger works as a trainer at Orange Lutheran.
Evidently the rivalry on the field still has room for love.
As all can see in the video and photos, Kekipi’s trick play scored big. He had the players from Servite sign a football and the ball was presented to Zieger in the postgame ceremony, supposedly as a thank-you for her training services. But also on that ball was a special message: “Will you marry me?”
The game was wild enough, with Orange Lutheran scoring on the final play of the contest to take a 37-36 victory. The best moment, though, was undoubtedly Zieger accepting her beau’s proposal.
