Kentucky High School gets first athletic trainer ever

For the first time in Mason County High School history, the school has a full-time certified athletic trainer.

Morgan Dorsey, a soon-to-be graduate of Morehead State University was hired on before the fall sports season started and will work with the Royals athletic program throughout the year.

“As a former coach, it’s huge,” Royals Co-Athletic Director Chris O’Hearn said. “It brings us comfort with a trained impartial person watching over our athletes.”

Dorsey is originally from Cincinnati and studied her undergrad at Xavier University. She finishes up her Masters Degree in Sports Management at Morehead in December.

“I’m very excited to be here,” Dorsey said. “It’s not every day you get to be the first trainer at a program.”

Dorsey’s been busy in her first couple months with the program. The football team has had to deal with a slew of injuries, while both soccer teams have had to deal with concussions and the volleyball and cross country teams have had their variety of injuries as well.

“Unfortunately, we’ve kept her busy,” O’Hearn said. “It shows there’s been a need for this position, for a long, long time.”

“It’s been challenging,” Dorsey said. “It’s hard managing every single sport and trying to keep up with everyone. People are starting to get used to me though and getting more comfortable coming up to me.”

O’Hearn praised the Meadowview Regional Medical Center for being instrumental in getting this together.

“They did a great job of locating and finding applicants,” O’Hearn said.
