Reds promote Baumann to head athletic trainer

The Reds announced on Tuesday they will have a new head athletic trainer. Steve Baumann, who has spent the past 11 seasons as the team’s assistant athletic trainer, has been promoted to the position.

Baumann succeeds Paul Lessard in the position. The Washington Nationals are expected to announce that Lessard has joined their organization where he will work with former Reds manager Dusty Baker.

Assistant athletic trainer Tomas Vera and strength and conditioning coordinator Sean Marohn will return to the Reds’ medical staff. They will be joined by new assistant athletic trainer Jimmy Mattocks, who was promoted from Class AAA Louisville.

Baumann, 38, is a Cincinnati native and a University of Cincinnati graduate. He was hired by the Reds organization in 1999 and worked his way through minor league affiliates before being made the assistant athletic trainer in 2005.
