Tampa Bay Lightning AT raises awareness for mens health

The Tampa Bay Lightning will hold a fundraising night for Movember on Saturday, November 21, during the Bolts’ game against the Anaheim Ducks at Amalie Arena. Movember is a campaign bringing attention to men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

Men grow out mustaches during the month of November in order to bring men’s health issues to the forefront of the conversation.

“The mustache is to raise awareness for men’s health issues, number one being prostate cancer, “Tampa Bay Lightning head athletic trainer Tom Mulligan said. “A lot of times, there are online contributions people can make. Our players get involved with that to raise awareness and raise funds for prostate cancer research,”

The #BoltsStache event will not only enhance the conversation on men’s health issues but motivate men to get screened for early detections of prostate cancer.

“Once you have symptoms of prostate cancer, it’s already starting to spread,” Mulligan said. “By getting an exam, that leads to early detection and can prevent future consequences.”

According to the Movember Foundation, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men in the U.S., and testicular cancer is the most common cancer for young men ages 15-34.

“You definitely want to have an exam starting at the age of 50,” Mulligan said. “Prior to 50, when you’re in your 40s, you can start doing some blood tests and that can show early signs of enlargement of the prostate.”

Movember also focuses on mental health and physical inactivity. Around one in four adults in the U.S. will experience a mental health problem in a given year and 53.8 percent of American men meet the federal guidelines for physical activity.
