Athletic trainers recognized for heroic actions

Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge athletic trainers Rosalyn Hart, who is assigned to Draughn High School, and Sara Woods, who is assigned to East Burke High School, were recognized at Monday’s Burke County Public Schools board of education meeting for their role in responding to medical emergency.

On Oct. 31, during the West 2A Regional cross-country meet at Freedom High School, a spectator was in distress. Hart and Woods reacted quickly and used their medical training and access to early defibrillation to help make a difference in the life of the spectator.

Burke County Public Schools representatives said they appreciate their partnership with the Sports Medicine Center at CHCSBR and thanked them for providing excellent athletic trainers who work with student athletes.

In addition to Ms. Woods and Ms. Hart, they also acknowledged the help of their assistants during this incident, who included Jordan Johnson, a graduate athletic trainer student at Lenoir Rhyne University, Darius Burgess, a student athletic trainer from Freedom High School, and Myron Stephens, the sports medicine manager for Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge.
