Celtics’ Dr. Edward Lacerte to be Inducted Into NE Basketball Hall of Fame

Dr. Edward J. Lacerte will be inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame at the DCU Center in Worcester on Saturday, August 8th. He will join other honorees who have each contributed to the legacy of New England Basketball.

“After knowing Ed as a player and an executive for 28 years, his dedication to both the team and to advancing the athletic training field is unparalleled,” said Celtics President of Basketball Operations, Danny Ainge. “His induction into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame is well-deserved and recognizes his continued commitment in the sports world.”

Lacerte has been the Head Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist for the Boston Celtics for 28 seasons, making him the longest-tenured athletic trainer in the history of the club. Additionally, he has served as the Treasurer of the National Basketball Association Trainer’s Association (“NBATA”) for the past 27 NBA seasons and has recently joined the NBA Sports Science Committee. Lacerte was honored as the Joe O’Toole NBA Athletic Trainer of the Year in 1993, 2012 and 2015.

Outside of his work with the Celtics, Lacerte was the Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist for three Olympic Sports Festivals (1987, 1989 and 1990), the 1991 Junior World Championships, the 1994 World Cup, and the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Gymnastic Trials. His Olympic experience culminated during the 1992 Olympic Games as the Athletic Trainer with the US Olympic Basketball “Dream Team” in Barcelona, Spain. Additionally, he has been an Athletic Trainer at three NBA All-Star Games (1998, 2000 and 2010).

As recognition for his exceptional service and dedication to the NBA and NBATA, Lacerte was honored as the first recipient of the Ed Lacerte Service Award in July 2009. He has continued to grow and learn within the realm of Sports Medicine. In addition to being an Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist, he is a Sports Clinical Specialist (APTA), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA), Performance Enhancement Specialist (NASM) and has acquired his Doctorate in Physical Therapy.
