Athletic Trainer Indicted on Sex Charges

Jeremy Eusea, Hahnville High School athletic trainer and teacher accused of sexual misconduct with two students earlier this year, has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of computer-aided solicitation of a minor, contributing to the delinquency of juveniles and prohibitive sexual conduct between educator and student. The official bill of indictment was filed June 22 and his arraignment set for 9 a.m. July 12.

The Paradis resident was arrested March 4 on accusations that he had inappropriate physical contact, and sent inappropriate texts and pictures to a 17-year-old student, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Eusea, 30, made bail at the time, but after an investigation he was arrested for a second time only a day later. Further allegations emerged that he engaged in “sexting” with another student, this one 16 years of age.

After the second arrest, he was booked on three felonies:  one count each of computer-aided solicitation of a minor, prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and student and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. Eusea also was booked on two misdemeanors of indecent behavior with a juvenile and pornography involving juveniles with a 16-year-old student during 2010-11.

His arrest represented the fourth St. Charles Parish educator arrested on charges of inappropriate behavior with students within a two year time frame.

Two of those occurred this year. Destrehan teacher Kimberly Naquin was arrested in January and charged with prohibited conduct in both St. Charles and Jefferson parishes.

The sudden rash of these cases spurred Terry Abbott, former chief of staff with the U.S. Department of Education whose public relations firm tracks cases of educators accused or convicted of sexual contact with students, to point to Instagram and Twitter as catalysts for a line of communication between teachers and students more open than ever before.

He also cited school policies on teacher-student communications, such as the one used in the St. Charles Parish system, as not being specific enough to be effective. Earlier this year, the St. Charles Parish School Board made efforts to change that, passing revisions to personnel policies dealing with sexual harassment of students, child abuse and neglect, electronic communication between employees and students and bullying and harassment.

The Board’s stated goal was to ensure the school system’s policy made clear reference to reporting requirements, as well as the revisions clearly, consistently and explicitly define reporting of violations as mandatory. Those policies were brought forth for review less than three weeks after Eusea’s arrest and were officially passed in May.

Louisiana Athletic Trainer Arrested

A Hahnville High School teacher accused of carrying on an inappropriate sexual relationship with 17-year-old student was rearrested after investigators discovered he sent explicit texts to another 16-year-old student in 2010, authorities said.

Jeremy Eusea, 30, of Paradis, was rebooked Friday night (March 4) with computer-aided solicitation of a minor, indecent behavior with a juvenile, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, possession of pornography involving juveniles and prohibited sexual contact between an educator and a student, said Capt. Pat Yoes, spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives first arrested Eusea Thursday after they learned he had “inappropriate physical contact” and sent inappropriate texts and pictures a 17-year-old student, Yoes said. Authorities booked him Thursday with sexual battery and prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student.

Investigators then discovered a second victim, a 16-year-old that Eusea is accused of sending inappropriate text messages to in 2010 and 2011, Yoes said. The conversations included photos and occurred during and after school.

According to the school’s website, Eusea is a sixth-year teacher at the school, and is a nationally board certified athletic trainer. He taught sports medicine, and earned a doctorate in athletic training from the University of Idaho.

Eusea is the fourth St. Charles Parish teacher accused of sexual misconduct with a student in the past two years. Destrehan High teachers Shelley Dufresne and Rachel Respess were arrested in 2014 in connection with a 16-year-old student.

Dufresne pleaded guilty to obscenity in St. Charles Parish, admitting she had sex with the student. But she still faces similar charges in Jefferson Parish. Respess is accused of failing to report a crime.

Destrehan High teacher Kimberly Naquin was arrested in January, accused of an almost yearlong sexual relationship with a 16-year old student.

Eusea, who has been suspended without pay, was being held without bond Saturday at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center in Hahnville.

Authorities aren’t sure whether there are any additional victims, but the case is still under investigation.
