Authorities are investigating an inappropriate relationship involving an athletic trainer at Lakewood High School and a recent graduate.

The trainer in question is a Spectrum Health employee who contracted with the district.

According to a statement from Lakewood Superintendent Randy Fleenor, the trainer was barred from district property and that the district asked Spectrum Health to reassign her. She has since been fired.

The Barry County Sheriff’s Office, which is handling the investigation along with Portland police, says the report of the situation came in on Oct. 21. Children’s Protective Services has been notified.

The district believes this is an isolated incident and said it doesn’t think any current students were involved.

Spectrum Health provided this statement Thursday:

“Spectrum Health employees are expected to follow the highest ethical standards and undergo extensive background checks before they are hired. We were very disappointed to learn of the behavior of this athletic trainer. Spectrum Health has terminated the trainer’s employment.”

A Spectrum spokesperson went on to say after a separate criminal sexual conduct case involving a contracted trainer inappropriately touching Kent City High School students earlier this year, Spectrum created new guidelines for its trainers “to further ensure and safety and privacy of students.” The spokesperson said the incident involving the Lakewood trainer, though it was reported only recently, happened several months before the Kent City incident and the new guidelines.

Athletic trainer facing charges for inappropriate contact with patients

A high school athletic trainer and physical therapist is facing charges for allegedly taking inappropriate pictures of his clients.

Justin Greenlaw, 27, of Grand Rapids was an employee of Spectrum Health. The charges are related to two adult clients. Investigators are also looking into whether there were any victims at a local high school, where he has been the athletic trainer since 2013.

Kent City School Superintendent Mike Weiler says the charges against Greenlaw are disturbing to hear.

“Absolutely,” Weiler said. “We’re concerned about all our kids. So that’s the first thing that goes through your mind. All the students he had been treating for the past two-and-a-half years.”

Besides being assigned to Kent City Schools, Greenlaw was also sent to Display Pack in Grand Rapids where he was assisting employees with back pain. On July 6 two adults reported inappropriate conduct during their sessions.

Grand Rapids police searched Greenlaw’s home and car and found numerous electronic devices. He now faces two charges of surveilling an unclothed person and two charges of using a computer to commit a crime.

In a statement, Spectrum Health says: “We are very distressed to learn of this issue. Preserving the safety and privacy of Spectrum Health patients is our highest priority. … The employee has been terminated.”

In Kent City, Weiler says the investigation is still ongoin.  The Kent County Sheriff’s Department is trying to determine if there were any victims at the middle or high school. A letter was sent home to parents, last week.

“Just notifying them of the situation and asking them to contact us if there were any issues regarding this matter,” Weiler said.

Greenlaw was arrested late last week, bonded out of jail, and will officially be arraigned on the four felony charges Thursday, July 21.
