Graduate Assistants added at Nichols College

Nichols College Director of Athletics Chris Colvin has announced the additions of Andrew DeSimone, Erin Shellene, and Jack Adams to the Athletic Training Staff as graduate assistants.

DeSimone – who will work primarily with the field hockey, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, and rugby (club) programs – has spent the last two years as an intern assistant athletic trainer at Yale University. He traveled with both men’s basketball and women’s ice hockey while working with a myriad of other programs, including football, baseball, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, and men’s and women’s fencing. He provided assisting care, treatment, and rehabilitation for overlapping fall and winter teams, assisted with weekly Ortho Clinics, and assisted with post-surgical rehabilitation procedures.

DeSimone graduated from Quinnipiac University in 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science in Athletic Training / Sports Medicine, where he worked with men’s lacrosse (2011-12) and women’s soccer (2012). He bookended those experiences working with the Yale University football team in 2011 and the University of New Haven’s spring football and track & field programs in the spring of 2013. DeSimone is a member of the National Athletic Training Association (NATA) and is both NATABOC and Graston M1 certified.

“We look forward to welcoming Andrew to our staff,” said Nichols College head athletic trainer Tim Bennett. “He has gained valuable experiences during his time at Yale and we believe that will help us transition successfully into a brand new athletic training facility.”

Adams, meanwhile, graduated from the University of Connecticut last month with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. He will provide primary coverage for the men’s soccer, women’s ice hockey, men’s tennis, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s track & field programs at Nichols. As a senior, he split time at Eastern Connecticut State and UConn. Adams developed and executed rehabilitation programs with injured athletes and completed baseline SCAT 3 testing for student-athletes at ECSU before working with the men’s soccer program at UConn this past spring.

“Jack will be a valuable piece of the athletics department at Nichols,” said Bennett. “As a recent college graduate, I believe Nichols will help him get an understanding of how an athletic department works at the Division III level.”

Adams was a summer intern with the New York Jets in 2014, administering modalities during daily treatment sessions and entering treatment information into eClinicalWorks. He also provided sideline coverage during preseason contests. Adams worked with the UConn football program as a sophomore and provided medical coverage at home basketball, baseball, and softball at Bloomfield High School during the spring semester of his junior campaign at UConn. He was an undergraduate student member of NATA and a member of the University of Connecticut Athletic Training Society.

Shellene is a 2015 graduate of Merrimack College, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. During her four years in North Andover, Shellene worked with women’s lacrosse (2013), softball (2014), and men’s basketball (2014-15).  She is a member of both the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and NATA.

“Erin is going to be a good fit for our department moving forward,” said Bennett. “To be able to get a candidate with her knowledge this late in the summer is something we were not expecting as a department.”

Shellene – who also spent time at Reading Memorial High School in 2013 – took part in the Haiti Service Initiative at Merrimack in January of 2014. There, she trained Haitian community health agents to provide their patients with exercises designed to treat and prevent musculoskeletal injuries. Shellene also designed specific programs comprised of low-risk, stretching and strengthening rehabilitative exercises to help with pain caused by the daily stresses of the community.

All three own American Red Cross First Aid/CPR and AED certification.
