Donor funds Rhinelander HS athletic trainer position

Rhinelander School District has received $15,000 each from Aspirus Clinic and Ministry Medical Group to fund an Athletic Trainer position for the school’s sports activities. The checks were presented to school officials Wednesday morning.

School Superintendent Kelli Jacobi says having a skilled trainer available will help the injured athletes. “They will be at our highest contact events and practices so if there are student injuries, somebody is looking at them, assessing the severity and getting them the kind of support they need immediately.”

This is the second year both health care providers contributed money for the position. Dr. Jason Lowry has been team advisor to Rhinelander schools for several years. He says there’s a heightened awareness of sports concussions and injuries so it is very important to have a trainer available.

Lowry says this is a fundamental shift on how injuries are addressed. He says historically it’s been a donated service, but with a paid position funded privately, it puts a trainer available during times when injuries might occur.
