University Laboratory School’s head athletic trainer Melissa Sorrells has been awarded the Back to Sport grant, funded through the National Football League and American Hospital Association.
The grant is given in recognition of exemplary efforts as an advocate for youth sports safety, a news release said.
The grant provided a fully funded educational program aimed at parents, coaches and educators of student athletes, the release said. Covered program topics include concussion, heat, hydration, cardiac arrest and property response and prevention of overuse injuries.
As a result of Sorrells’ efforts, U-high became a member of the Youth Sports Safety Alliance and an officials, organizational affiliate of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons “STOP Sports Injuries” movement.
