Johnson named International leagues’s athletic Trainer of the Year

Charlotte Knights Head Athletic Trainer Scott Johnson has been named as the International League’s Trainer of the Year by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS). The award, which is given annually to one member of each of the 16 leagues in Minor League Baseball, as well as one award for the Dominican Summer League, is the third for Johnson. He also received the award in 2000 and 2001.

“I am very proud to announce PBATS’ Minor League Athletic Trainers of the Year,” PBATS President Mark O’Neal said. “These athletic trainers made an impact on their entire league and stood out in 2015 as the best at their craft in their respective leagues. I am honored that they all showed the dedication and professionalism it took to keep their players on the field. This group represents the bright future that lies ahead for PBATS.”

The 2015 season is the 27th overall for Johnson as a trainer in the Chicago White Sox organization. The Bismarck, North Dakota native is currently in his 13th season with the Charlotte Knights. A graduate of North Dakota State University, Johnson spent 12 seasons with the Knights from 1999-2010 before moving on to Kannapolis (2011-12) and Birmingham (2013-14).

“I’m honored to receive this award,” stated Johnson. “I would like to thank the other trainers in the International League for voting for me this season. It truly means a lot knowing that this award has come from my peers.”

All 16 league winners, the Dominican Summer League winner and the Minor League Coordinator of the Year will now be eligible for the prestigious Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year award voted upon by the full membership of PBATS. That award will be given at the 2015 Major League Baseball Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn.

Freitas named top MWL athletic trainer

The Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) announced that Rafael Freitas of the Kane County Cougars has been selected by his peers as the 2015 Midwest League Athletic Trainer of the Year. Rafael now becomes one of eighteen league winners to be considered for Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year, which will be announced and awarded at theBaseball Winter Meetings in December.

Freitas is in his second year with the Arizona Diamondbacks and prior to that, spent two seasons as trainer for the Cincinnati Reds’ Dominican Summer League team in 2012-13. He served as head athletic trainer for Team Brazil in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Freitas graduated from Florida International University in 2012 with his master’s degree in sports and fitness and from Florida State University in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training.

Other league award winners with ties to the Cougars include ’11 Cougars trainer James Stone, who was named Carolina League Athletic Trainer of the Year, and ’13 Cougars trainer Shane Nelson, named Southern League Athletic Trainer of the Year.

PBATS Announces top Minor League Athletic trainers

These awards are given annually to one member of each of the 16 leagues in Minor League Baseball, as well as one award for the Dominican Summer League. An additional award is given to the Minor League Coordinator of the Year.

Maritza Castro Named DSL Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year

Earlier this week, the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) announced that Padres Minor League trainer Maritza Castro of the Dominican Summer League (DSL) has been named the 2015 Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year for the DSL.

Castro, who has worked as an athletic trainer with the Dominican Summer League Padres for the last few seasons, was one of 18 award winners from the 16 leagues of Minor League Baseball.

She is now eligible to be awarded the prestigious Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year Award, which will be voted upon by the full membership of PBATS.

The overall award, which is only available to the 18 winners of their individual leagues and positions, award will be given at the 2015 Major League Baseball Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tennessee. The 114th Annual MLB Winter Meetings will be held between December 6th to December 10th of this year after the close of the regular season.

These awards are given annually to one member of each of the 16 leagues in Minor League Baseball, as well as one award for the Dominican Summer League.  An additional award is given to the Minor League Coordinator of the Year.

Castro becomes the second Padres’ MiLB Athletic Trainer to be recognized for a PBATS award, as she joins Daniel Turner in being another award recipient in the organizations’ top notch athletic training staff. Turner earned Texas League Athletic Trainer of the Year honors in 2014, and is in his ninth season of working in the Padres organization as a trainer with the Double-A San Antonio Missions.
