Victor Szwanki wins Otho Davis Scholarship

The Otho Davis Scholarship Foundation (ODSF) is pleased to announce the winners of its two annual awards. The Otho Davis Scholarship will be presented to Victor Szwanki of Temple University and the Dick Vermeil Award goes to Dr. Gary Dorshimer, team doctor of both the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Flyers. Both will be presented with their awards on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, at the Sheraton Society Hill.

Szwanki, a 24-year old of Ocean City, N.J., earned an undergraduate degree at Rowan University and is currently working towards his master’s degree in kinesiology at Temple University. He is a graduate assistant for its #23/23 ranked football team under head athletic trainer Al Bellamy. Szwanki also has served as an intern for the Kansas City Chiefs under Dave Price who was an assistant trainer to Otho Davis for over a decade. Szwanki will be awarded a check for $20,000.

In 2012, The ODSF began presenting the Dick Vermeil Award which honors a lifetime achievement in the field of sports medicine. Dorshimer is a general internal practitioner at University of Penn Medicine and has been the Philadelphia Eagles team internist and head team physician for the Philadelphia Flyers for nearly 20 years. A native of Allentown, Pa. he received a B.S. in natural science with summa cum laude honors from Muhlenberg College in 1977 and an M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1981.

In addition to the awards, this year the ODSF will go Back to the Phuture, to mark the 30th anniversary of the Robert Zemeckis classic film and a memorable year in Philadelphia sports. Sports fans in our city can never forget the 1985 year that brought glory to some of our teams and individual athletes. The Flyers went on the the Stanley Cup Finals, the 76ers went deep into the playoffs, and the Villanova basketball team won the NCAA Championship in unforgettable fashion. Individual accomplishments were made by former Phillie Pete Rose as he broke the all-time hit record, and our very own former Eagle Harold Carmichael closed his career as the Eagles all-time leading receiver, a position he still holds today.

Joining us this year for the awards dinner and fundraiser will be Pete Rose, Harold Carmichael, members of the Philadelphia Flyers, and the Villanova Basketball Championship team, along with many other celebrity guests.

Through contributions, donations, and fundraisers, the ODSF has raised over $200,000. Each year the ODSF is pleased to provide a scholarship to college students. The Otho Davis Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization spearheaded by Otho’s friends and family. Since 1999, the organization has been working to raise funds to honor Otho’s wishes of establishing a scholarship for aspiring students studying sports medicine, sports marketing, or a related field.

A cocktail reception starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner and program at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are still available. Visit www.othodavisfoundation.org or call 877-500-1129

Temple Hires Helen Clay and Kendall Stewart as Assistant Athletic Trainers

Temple’s Associate Director of Athletic Training David Borchardt has announced the hire of two full-time Assistant Athletic Trainers. Helen Clay and Kendall Stewart will have a total of four direct sport responsibilities, while also overseeing others.

Clay will work directly with the volleyball and men’s tennis teams, and will oversee the athletic training fellow for men’s and women’s cross country and women’s track and field. Stewart’s primary responsibility will be working with the men’s soccer and women’s tennis programs, while overseeing women’s gymnastics.

“Helen and Kendall are great compliments to an already very impressive staff of athletic trainers here at Temple,” said Borchardt. “I am quite confident that both will not only succeed here, but will quickly assert themselves as vital components in our department’s success.”

Clay is already a familiar face in the athletic training room at Temple, having served as a graduate extern athletic trainer for the past two years. Clay worked with the men’s crew and women’s rowing teams while earning her master’s degree in athletic training from Temple, which she received in May, 2015.

“Helen brings an infectious passion for sports medicine and a very high level of professionalism to our department,” said Borchardt. “She was absolutely great for us as a graduate extern and we are very excited to bring her clinical knowledge and energy back to Temple as a full-time member of our staff.”

While earning her undergraduate degree from Penn State, Clay worked as a student athletic trainer with a number of the Nittany Lions’ athletic teams. She also spent parts of two years working as a personal trainer with Fitness Trainers, Inc., in Malvern, Pa.

Clay earned her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Penn State in 2013. She earned her board certification a month after graduation and is also licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine. She is a member of a number of professional organizations including the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society.

Stewart comes to Temple from Washington State University where he served a 10-month internship in athletic training, responsible for covering women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. During his time there, Stewart also worked as a personal trainer for SNAP Fitness.

“Kendall has a remarkable presence that is built from intelligence, confidence and great personality,” said Borchardt. “His skill set as an athletic trainer is already very comprehensive and I believe Kendall will hit the ground running here at Temple.”

While earning his master’s degree in kinesiology with a concentration in athletic training from Michigan State University, Stewart was a graduate assistant athletic trainer for two years. His sport responsibilities included wrestling, swimming and diving, cross country, track and field and football. During the summers, Stewart worked with a number of sport camps at Michigan State.

Stewart was in the honors program at San Diego State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with a concentration in athletic training in 2012. As a student athletic trainer, Stewart worked with San Diego State’s football and softball teams. He also worked nearby at San Diego City College with the men’s soccer, basketball and baseball teams. Stewart has been certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association since 2010.
