Melissa Guney Joins CSUSM Sports Medicine Staff

Head athletic trainer Michelle Hamilton announced the addition ofMelissa Guney to the athletic training staff on Thursday.

Guney will be the main athletic trainer for the men’s soccer team, the women’s basketball team and the softball team. She will assist with the daily responsibilities of running the athletic training room and will provide services to every CSUSM program as needed.

“It’s going to be great to have Melissa on staff with us,” said Hamilton. “She’s a quality addition to our department and I know our student-athletes will enjoy working with her.”

Guney comes to San Marcos after two seasons as an assistant athletic trainer for NCAA Division III’s Whittier College, where she was the primary trainer for 10 of the Poets’ squads while assisting with 12 others.

She also served last year as the head athletic trainer for the Whittier College Football 7-on-7 Tournament and the Next Level Training Soccer Camp in Hacienda Heights.

While working on her Master’s of Science in Athletic Training at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, Guney assisted on the training staff at New Hampton High School for over 300 student-athletes.

In addition, she helped cover men’s basketball, field hockey and softball for Plymouth State, a NCAA DIII institution.

Guney has participated in a variety of national training symposiums, including the Far West Athletic Trainer’s Association Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposia, the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Clinical Symposia & AT Expo, the New Hampshire Athletic Trainers’ Association Student Symposium and the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association Conference.

Guney is NATABOC Certified and has been a member of NATA since 2011. She holds a certification in AMA CPR/AED BLS for Healthcare Provider and First Aid, as well.

Guney graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Integrated Science, Business and Technology from La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pa. in 2008. She earned her M.S., Athletic Training from Plymouth State in 2013.

Athletic Trainers Join Ferrum Staff

Director of Athletics Abe Naff has announced the hiring of three new Assistant Athletic Trainers; Nicholas Erdman, Zach Johnson and Caitlin Keroack. The trio will be part of Ferrum’s staff of five professionals, serving over 500 student-athletes across 20 varsity teams and three club programs.

Erdman, Johnson and Keroack will work under Head Athletic Trainer John Zubal, now in his second year at the helm of Ferrum’s sports medicine program. Rounding out the staff is Assistant Athletic Trainer Caitlyn Richbourg, also in her second year at Ferrum.

Erdman comes to Ferrum from Shenandoah University, where he served as Athletic Training Student while pursuing his master’s degree. While there, he worked with Shepherd University, Bucknell University, Chantilly High School and John Handley High School Erdman earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Shenandoah in 2012 and 2015, respectively. As a football player for the Hornets, Erdman was an Academic All-American first team selection.

Johnson comes to Ferrum from Lindsey Wilson College, where he served as Assistant Athletic Trainer last year. Prior to that, he spent a year as a Grad Assistant Athletic Trainer at Virginia Military Institute. Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Hope College in 2013, where he also served as a Student Athletic Trainer. He then earned his Master of Education degree from the University of Virginia in 2014.

Keroack comes to Ferrum from Illinois State University, where she worked two years with the softball program. Prior to that, she spent a year at University of Richmond, where she worked with men’s and women’s track & field and with spring football. Keroack spent three years as a Student Athletic Trainer at Longwood University while working on her Bachelor of Science degree, which she earned in 2012. She went on to earn her Master of Science degree from Illinois State in 2015.

Lane Named Athletic Trainer at Shepherd

Shepherd University director of athletics B.J. Pumroy announced today that Shatora Lane has been named head athletic trainer. Lane replaces longtime trainer Gayle Conner, who retired after a 31-year career at Shepherd, including 26 years as the school’s first full-time trainer.

Lane has been an assistant athletic trainer at Shepherd since October 2014.  She has also served as an adjunct faculty member at Shenandoah since June 2014.

Lane has previous experience at Winchester Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine. She also worked as a student trainer at Shenandoah University, Randolph Macon Military Academy, and Westfield High School.

Lane earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Shenandoah University in 2012 and added a master’s degree in athletic training in 2014. She gained an Award of Academic Excellence in Kinesiology and the Outstanding Graduate Award School of Athletic Training honors at Shenandoah.

Lane was a four-year player on the Shenandoah softball team. She gained All-Conference honors and served as team captain for the Hornets.

Ashley Musick Named CSUDH Head Athletic Trainer

Cal State Dominguez Hills Athletics has named Ashley Musick as the Head Athletic Trainer, it was announced by CSUDH Associate Athletics Director Jamie Bouyer.

Musick, currently in her fourth season on the Sports Medicine Staff, has served as the Interim Head Athletic Trainer since January 2015.

A native of southern California, Musick earned her Master’s of Science in Athletic Training at California Baptist University, where she graduated with high honors after earning a Bachelor’s in Physical Education, Pre-Athletic Training from CSUDH, during which she spent three athletics seasons as an Athletic Training intern as an undergrad.

Musick also attained several additional certifications to broaden her skills as a clinician, a few of her most recent certifications including Gavilan Technician, National Registry Emergency Medical Technician and her Board of Certification Examination for Athletic Training.

Lindl added to Fort lewis College Staff

Fort Lewis College Assistant Athletic Director/Director of Sports Medicine Wayne Barger announced Bryan Lindl as the Skyhawks assistant athletic trainer.

“It is my pleasure to welcome Bryan Lindl to the Fort Lewis College Athletic Training Staff,” said Barger. “His educational background, enthusiasm, and professionalism fit in nicely with the Fort Lewis College family. I am excited to watch young professionals grow and develop at Fort Lewis College.”

A native of Madison, Wis., Lindl graduated from the University of Utah in 2015 with a Master of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Science, where he completed his research on the effectiveness of computerized neurocognitive testing in the return to play on high school athletes following a concussion.

“I’m thrilled to join the hard working team of athletic trainers at Fort Lewis College,” said Lindl. “I am excited to work with the Skyhawk student-athletes and to become part of the Durango community.”

As a graduate student at Utah, Lindl served as the certified athletic trainer for Judge Memorial Catholic High school for two years.  He also acted as a clinical preceptor for students in the University of Utah athletic training program.  Lindl assisted athletic training coverage for the women’s professional football team – the Utah Blitz – in 2014-15, as well as covering the University of Utah summer camps.

Lindl graduated from the University Wisconsin-Madison in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training.  He served as an intern at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, providing health care to the track and field, basketball and soccer teams. From 2010-12, he served as a student athletic trainer for the Badgers football, basketball, track and field, and rowing programs.

A certified athletic trainer, Lindl is certified in the Graston Technique and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).  He is also Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid for the Professional Rescuer certified.

Lindl will be the primary athletic trainer for men’s soccer and men’s basketball.

Montevallo announces additions to athletic training staff

University of Montevallo head athletic trainer Marcelo Galafassi is pleased to announce the addition of Maureen Wood and Trey Hollar to the Falcons’ athletic training staff.

“I’m really excited with the addition of Maureen and Trey to our sports medicine staff,” Galafassi said. “They did a great job during ODP camps and will work well with our student-athletes. They are definitely a good fit for our staff.”

Wood will work with the Montevallo men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s track and field teams, along with the Falcons’ women’s basketball team.

Wood came to Montevallo from Lock Haven University, where she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for two years. While at Lock Haven, Wood worked with the football, women’s swimming, women’s basketball and women’s lacrosse teams. Wood graduated in 2015 with a Master’s of Science in Sports Psychology.

Wood, who grew up in Nazareth, Pa., completed her undergraduate degree in Athletic Training at the West Chester University in 2013.

Wood is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.

Hollar will work primarily with men’s soccer and baseball teams at Montevallo.

Hollar came to Montevallo from Northwestern State University, where he served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer.

Hollar earned a Master of Science in Health and Human Performance with concentration in Sport Administration in May 2015 at Northwestern State.  While at Northwestern State, Hollar worked football, women’s tennis and men’s basketball.

Hollar, a native of Forsyth, Ga., graduated from Valdosta State University in May 2013 with Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. While at Valdosta State, Hollar worked with every sport except women’s soccer.

Hollar is also a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.

Bernard, Cutts Named to Assistant Athletic Training Positions

Middlebury College has announced the hiring of Bethany Bernard and Matt Cutts as assistant athletic trainers in the Sports Medicine Department. Bernard comes to Middlebury from Gwynedd Mercy, where she served in a similar position for the past two years, while Cutts was the head athletic trainer at Pinnacle High School in Phoenix, Arizona.

“I am very excited and incredibly honored to have the opportunity to work at Middlebury College,” said Bernard. “I have heard so many amazing things about the school, its athletic program and the people. I can’t wait to be a part of such an outstanding institution and community.”

While at Gwynedd Mercy, Bernard worked with multiple programs including women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field as well as and women’s lacrosse. She is a graduate of Lynchburg College and received her master’s degree at California University of Pennsylvania.

As an undergraduate at Lynchburg, Bernard was a four-year member of the Hornet field hockey team, winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference title three times and playing in the NCAA Tournament each year. In the classroom, Bernard was selected to the ODAC’s All-Conference Academic Team each of her four years. Before working at Gwynedd Mercy, Bernard was associated with Commonwealth Orthopedic Associates, where she was contracted as a full-time Athletic Trainer at Alvernia University.

Cutts comes to Vermont from Physiotherapy Associates in Arizona where he was the Head Athletic Trainer at Pinnacle High School. He was responsible for 20 varsity sports and over 750 student-athletes. No stranger to the northeast, Cutts received his undergraduate degree from Keene State College and later earned a master’s from Indiana State University.

“I am excited and eager to begin working alongside the Middlebury College sports medicine staff,” said Cutts. “I am humbled by the opportunity to become a part of such an academically and athletically successful institution.”

Prior to his time in Arizona, Cutts spent two seasons in the National Football League as an intern in the athletic training department with the New England Patriots. He worked for two years at Bryant University in Rhode Island before returning to school for a secondary degree in athletic training.

BATISTE JOINS ATHLETIC STAFF AS ASSISTANT A.D. FOR SPORTS MEDICINE

The Elizabeth City State University Athletic Department is proud to announce La Tanja Batiste as the new Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine.

As the Head Athletic Trainer for the Vikings, “LT” is responsible for managing the daily operations of the Sports Medicine Department and providing medical coverage for the 10 Division II NCAA sports teams and the D’Lytes Cheerleading squad.

Batiste brings over 15 years of experience to the ECSU Athletic Department. She comes to ECSU after an 11-year stint as the Head Athletic Trainer at Queens University of Charlotte. Prior to that, she served as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Benedict College in Columbia, SC for one year.

During her time at Queens, Batiste also held the title of Senior Woman Administrator for five years. The Royals, a 17-sport plus cheer program at the start of her tenure, expanded to include men’s and women’s swim in 2011 and as of this fall their quantity will increase by one to include 20 sports with the addition of field hockey.

With the growth of the Athletic Department at Queens came the additional responsibility of supervising a Sports Medicine staff that evolved from one to five individuals. Additionally she handled the task of designing and furnishing two additional fully functioning sports medicine facilities.

LT credits her position of Assistant Athletic Trainer at Benedict College with preparing her for the aspects of athletic training that cannot be learned in the classroom. At Benedict she was one of two certified athletic trainers responsible for providing medical coverage, injury prevention and care for 13 Division II NCAA sports, including football.

Batiste’s athletic training career began as an undergraduate athletic training student at Georgia Southern University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology in 2000. At Georgia Southern she worked with an Eagles’ team that went on to capture the 1999 Division I-AA National Football Championship. She earned her Master’s Degree in Sports Medicine from Georgia State University in 2003 while working as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Walton High School in Marietta, GA.

A native of Augusta, GA, La Tanja is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and is also a 2011 graduate and active member of the NCAA’s Leadership Institute.

Olivet College tabs Shockey as interim AD

Ryan Shockey has been named the Interim Athletic Director at Olivet College.

The announcement comes after the school terminated the contracts of former Athletic Director David Sichterman and Assistant Athletic Director Korey Heppeard on July 10.

“Ryan has a strong background in intercollegiate athletics, and is highly regarded by our athletic staff, student-athletes and other members of our campus community,” Olivet College President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D said in a release. “Ryan agreed to serve in this interim capacity for the next several months, holding the primary responsibility of athletic department leadership. He will work closely with me and the athletic coaching staff preparing the college for our search for a regular appointment.”

Shockey joined the Comet staff in 2013 as head athletic trainer, and will continue to serve in that capacity. Prior to Olivet, he was head athletic trainer at Trine University (Ind.) for six years. Shockey worked primarily with the football, indoor track and baseball teams, while coordinating supervision and coverage for all varsity and junior varsity teams. Shockey began his career as a graduate assistant in Trine’s athletic training department during the 2006-07 academic year.

Shockey lives in Angola, Ind. with his wife and their three daughters.

Donahue Hired To Frostburg’s Athletic Training Staff

Frostburg State director of athletics Troy A. Dell has announced the hiring of Cassie Donahue as an assistant athletic trainer for the 2015-16 athletic year.

Donahue is reunited with the Bobcat athletic training staff after serving as a student assistant from 2008-12 and an assistant athletic trainer in 2012-13.

Last year, Donahue served as an assistant athletic trainer at Ferrum College in Ferrum, Va. She covered the men’s and women’s soccer, wrestling and women’s lacrosse teams. She also served as an adjunct professor (Intro to Muscular Fitness), assisted with insurance for student-athletes, scheduled work-study students and developed strength and conditioning programs for various athletic teams.

Prior to Ferrum, Donahue was the head athletic trainer at Penn State Fayette while serving as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at California Univ. of Pa. She covered women’s volleyball, cross country, men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, softball and baseball. She was the administrator for ImPACT testing, managed the office budget and served as the head athletic trainer for the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Basketball National Championships.

Donahue earned her bachelor’s degree from Frostburg State in athletic training in May 2012 and her master’s in athletic training from California (Pa.) in May ’14. Donahue was also a standout women’s soccer player during her four years at Frostburg, helping the Bobcats to 68 wins, including three appearances in the ECAC Tournament and one appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

As an assistant athletic trainer at FSU in 2012-13, she covered the men’s basketball, softball, women’s lacrosse and women’s soccer teams.

Donahue has additional athletic training experience with Frostburg soccer camps (2010-11), Frederick soccer camps (2010-11), the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Basketball Tournament (2010-12), Coach Wootten Basketball Camp (2010), Concussion Awareness Presentation for Referees (2012-13) and a 2015 NATA Thesis Research Presentation.

Donahue is a member of the Eastern Athletic Trainers Association, a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer and a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA). She received her Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) certification while at California (Pa.).
