Head athletic trainer Michelle Hamilton announced the addition ofMelissa Guney to the athletic training staff on Thursday.
Guney will be the main athletic trainer for the men’s soccer team, the women’s basketball team and the softball team. She will assist with the daily responsibilities of running the athletic training room and will provide services to every CSUSM program as needed.
“It’s going to be great to have Melissa on staff with us,” said Hamilton. “She’s a quality addition to our department and I know our student-athletes will enjoy working with her.”
Guney comes to San Marcos after two seasons as an assistant athletic trainer for NCAA Division III’s Whittier College, where she was the primary trainer for 10 of the Poets’ squads while assisting with 12 others.
She also served last year as the head athletic trainer for the Whittier College Football 7-on-7 Tournament and the Next Level Training Soccer Camp in Hacienda Heights.
While working on her Master’s of Science in Athletic Training at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, Guney assisted on the training staff at New Hampton High School for over 300 student-athletes.
In addition, she helped cover men’s basketball, field hockey and softball for Plymouth State, a NCAA DIII institution.
Guney has participated in a variety of national training symposiums, including the Far West Athletic Trainer’s Association Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposia, the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Clinical Symposia & AT Expo, the New Hampshire Athletic Trainers’ Association Student Symposium and the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association Conference.
Guney is NATABOC Certified and has been a member of NATA since 2011. She holds a certification in AMA CPR/AED BLS for Healthcare Provider and First Aid, as well.
Guney graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Integrated Science, Business and Technology from La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pa. in 2008. She earned her M.S., Athletic Training from Plymouth State in 2013.
